Footsteps echoed in the hollowed room of God. The gilded walls shown with opulence and decadence as the poor begged outside. Few people were in the church which pleased Lilliana as she did not want any distractions. She was wearing a dark green dress with a black veil to cover her face and hair. Her rosary beads were wrapped around her fingers in her hands as she knelt in front of Christ on the cross. Her head was bent as if she was in the act of praying, though truly her thoughts were somewhere else.
Lilli could not help but think of her predicament. Though her parents had protected her for eighteen years, they now wanted to use her family connections and beauty to make the best desirable match for the family. All Lilli could hope for was that she would feel something for whomever her betrothed would be. For the longest time her mind and never pondered over the possibility of love and marriage. Though a romantic and an idealist at heart, she had other things to think of. She enjoyed her lessons with her tutor and loved to read, but she had yet to meet a man who sparked anything inside her, though she was still quite sheltered.
But soon all that would change. Soon she would be thrown out into society for all to behold and judge her. Lilli did not want to be judged or be the center of people's talk and attention. Her cousins were probably better at that than her. Lilli looked up at the beautiful moldings and painting surrounding her. A Cappelletti servant waited for her outside, but she was not ready to leave her solitude just yet. She enjoyed being away from the family and her duty.

It was quiet within the majestic walls of the church. Lino’s footsteps echoed with each step he took, the sound of his boots upon the marbled floor seeming to bounce off the high walls. Besides this there was no other noise within the church and Lino found it refreshing compared to the hustle and bustle outside. It was as though stepping into the church he had stepped into a different world, one of peace and calm compared to the chaos outside.
Quietly Lino walked up the long isle towards the grand alter at the head of the church. There was hardly anyone about and he was thankful for that – he needed some peace and quiet for a time. As the approached his eyes caught sight of a woman kneeling by the head alter. She was wearing a dress of rich green and her face was covered by a dark veil. With the rosaries in her hand she looked as though she was deep in prayer and Lino did not wish to disturb her.
As he approached the alter Lino bowed and then knelt down on the cushion provided for prayer. He made the sign of the cross and then reached into his pocket, pulling out his own set of rosaries. Silently he held them in his hand, bringing them up to his lips and kissing the beads. They had belonged to his mother and were one of his most precious and beloved possessions. He treasured the beads with great reverence and kept them with him always.
Bowing his head Lino began to pray.

As Lilli knelt in front of the grand altar, she heard soft footsteps of an approaching person. Without looking up, she subtly noticed that it was a man. Lilli's heart quickened, though it was not because of this particular man, but because she was unaccustomed to being near any man who was not family or a servant to the family. At eighteen years, Lilli was rather sheltered and innocent in most respects. But she smiled under her dark veil at the thought of kneeling near a young, quite handsome man.
Now that the man was kneeling, Lilli was able to look up and take in the image of the man. He was slender, though not too thin, and he looked to be very handsome. He was close, but not exactly like the man in her dreams. Someone that she had created in her imagination as her knight in shining armor. She watched as he kissed his rosary beads and she remembered her own in her hands and suddenly heard a clatter as they fell from her grasp, having been forgotten as she had watched the man. Lilli looked down at her beads and picked them up, looking around to see if anyone saw her.

The sudden sound of something falling to the floor snapped Lino out of his prayers. The noise seemed to be amplified in the almost deathly quiet church and Lino’s attention was drawn to what had caused the clattering. Turning his head he looked across to the source of the noise and the woman next to him. He watched silently as she quickly bent down and gathered her rosary beads up – the source of the clattering. As she raised her head she appeared to be looking at back at him, at least that’s what Lino guessed. The woman wore a thick veil concealing her face so Lino could not be completely sure that the woman was looking at him or past him. Still, just in case she was looking at him Lino offered her a kind smile, after all no harm was done.
